Enameling is a centuries-old tradition in which powdered glass is fused to a surface by means of firing in a kiln at temperatures between 1,300 and 1,500 degrees. In the process, the powder melts, flows, and then hardens to a smooth coating on either metal (usually copper, silver or steel) or on glass or ceramics. Arkansas artist Thom Hall's skillfully composed cloisonné enamel panels are drawn from a rich tapestry of childhood memories, fantasies, dreams, and desires.
