Shlian began his academic career focused on ceramics, but soon realized he wasn’t just interested in ceramics. He was interested in everything. He soon found he loved the immediacy of paper as his medium. An advisor gifted him a pop-up book and after some investigation into their mechanics, his style took off. The artist says his starting point for each piece is curiosity. He goes on to say that he must finish a work to understand it, and that the end result is a surprise.

This edition of Matthew Shlian's Misfold design was originally licensed to Finell in 2014. In this version the material is a robust Tyvek with wooden covers painted white. It comes with a signed wrap and in a fancy black box for storage.
