Whitfield Lovell 2024 Calendar

Through inspired combinations of Conte crayon drawings and vintage objects, Whitfield Lovell’s Kin series evokes the personal histories of anonymous individuals, which are often lost over time. In each work, Lovell pairs an exquisitely detailed drawing of a person with an object of significance. The images are derived from Lovell’s collection of identification photos of African Americans, most of them dating from between the Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil Rights Movement. The reclaimed objects interact with the expressions of the subject, imbuing meaning and life experiences onto those individuals. The juxtapositions open up possibilities, inviting the viewer to consider the individual character and humanity of each person depicted. The 12 works featured in this calendar honor the fullness of human life through the presence of individuals.
