Jon Wilson

A Little Rock resident since 2014. Jon began carving stone in the 1990’s, starting
with soapstone, and then moving on to alabaster, limestone and marble. He favors hand tools (hammers, chisels and rifflers) for the time they require and which enable him to settle into the stone work and the more physical connection to the piece of stone they provide.

Most of his stone sculptures start out as sketches, but the initial form frequently alters during the process of carving as potentially more interesting features become visible. The final surface texture of the stone sculpture is accomplished by using multiple progressively finer grades of wet/dry sandpaper with water (ranging from coarse 80 grit to fine 2000 grit).
